In yet another effort to strengthen opposition unity against the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP), the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has decided to support joint candidates of Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Ajit Singh's Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).
Political pundits say AAP's support may not have a far-reaching effect on the existing equations in UP as the party is a marginal player there. However, AAP pledging support is being seen as a boost to the Modi vs Opposition template for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
After humiliating UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Gorakhpur and Deputy Chief Minister Maurya in Phoolpur, the united opposition is rallying behind Tabassum Hasan, the RLD candidate from Kairana against the BJP's Mriganka Singh for the Lok Sabha bypolls.
For the Noorpur Vidhan Sabha seat, the BJP candidate Avani Singh is pitted against SPs Naim-ul-Hasan.
It will be interesting to see how AAP supporters react to the party standing together with Congress, SP and BSP, all of whom its chief Arvind Kejriwal had dubbed as corrupt parties, at the beginning of the AAP's journey.
Kejriwal will also be seen sharing the stage with Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati, Ajit Singh, N Chandrababu Naidu, K Chandrasekhar Rao, Pinarayi Vijayan, Kamal Haasan, Tejashwi Yadav among other opposition leaders at the swearing-in ceremony of HD Kumaraswamy in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
